Team GB seize double Bronze at
European CIC** Team Championship Outstanding performances in the Team and Individual tests saw Britain overcome ‘Dressage masters’ Belgium and Germany to top the leader board in this phase for the first time. The team were complimented on their riding by Peter Wagner, President of the Ground Jury, who awarded them three nines for their performance. Austrian course builder Karl Parr’s cross-country course provided a tough test, especially as holding ground proved tiring for the horses. Only three riders completed inside the optimum time, and these included Britain’s Hannah Mace riding Toy Boy III and Matthew Heath on Gran Chaco. Germany proved the stronger across country but a run out by the German leader after dressage allowed Hannah Mace, who had been lying second, to move into the Individual Gold position. Three poles down in the Show Jumping put the Gold just out of Hannah’s reach but she was delighted to finish third, taking Individual Bronze. Hannah also received the Sue Picken Trophy for the highest placed British rider. The few clear rounds in the show jumping included Harriet Morris-Baumber (Shannon Dales Skatman), Jodie Amos (Altairs Luck) and Matthew Heath (Gran Chaco). Matthew was the only rider to finish on his dressage score and gain an eventual Individual sixth place. Peter Buist, Chef de Mission to the British Team said: “It was a fantastic result; the whole team just out performed themselves. The training provided by Chef d’Equipe Richard Waygood and Jonathan Chapman was clearly a major contribution to the success of the squad. Our grooms also worked hard and turned out their horses in immaculate condition. It's a credit to them and the riders’ fitness work that all horses came out on the last day and jumped so well.”
The Team was comprised of: Thursday 2nd July We managed to get a brief summary of the day from Team trainer Richard Waygood: "The team excelled themselves today. It is not often in sporting events, under the pressure of competition, that competitios are able to perform to their maximum. This did happen today, putting the team in a competitive second position after day one of the dressage." Well done all and good luck for the next phase!
Wednesday 1st July The horses had an easy day with a light hack in the morning followed by some flatwork in the afternon. They would appear to have settled in well and coped remarkably with the long journey. The day was spent completing various admin tasks and exploring the site. Emma and Lucy decided to go for a swim, but returned 5 minutes after leaving with stories of large fish diving between their legs (brave fish!)
Tuesday 30th June A long but uneventful journey (3 days) involving overnight stops in Frankfurt came to an end when the horses finally arrived at the showground on Monday at around 1pm. Our arrival was clearly a day too early since very little infrastructure was in place, the most obvious of which was a lack of stables. The horses coped well with the hot and humid conditions. It was the handlers that suffered most! They built the camp and awaited the arrival of the riders who were fling in and driving down in cars. The group of riders finally arrived, some via Croatia and random sightseeing tours of Budapest. we can only hope that their navigational skills will improve before the cross country on Saturday! Saturday 27th June After a final team practice at Boomerang farm on Friday afternoon, Team GB loaded all the necessary kit and food for the long journey across Europe into the lorries that are taking the horses to Hungary. The task was not easy as 8 horses require a lot of equipment, but under the guidance of Jonathan Chapman this was completed in an orderly and efficient manner. Horses and riders all had a very early start this morning as the horses were loaded onto the transporter at the crack of dawn to set off for Dover. We will try and keep you up to date with the progress of the team as the competition unfolds (subject to internet connections and availability), so please check this site for updates and maybe even a few pictures of the event as it unfolds. 22 May May 2009 - Final Training and Team display The latest phase in the team
training programme took place at Withington Manor Horse Trials over the
weekend of 2 & 3 May. All members of the squad competed in the Open
Intermediate section that used the CIC** dressage test. The section was open
to other riders and horses and contained a massive forty four combinations.
Although we missed out on the top two slots, our squad filled five of the
top nine places – a fantastic achievement. Chef d’Equipe Richard Waygood was
very pleased with the exercise and felt that the result could not have been
much better. Windsor Horse Show The Royal Windsor Horse Show has invited us to give two performances of the team dressage test. The displays will be given on Wednesday 13 May and Sunday 17 May. Bleinheim Horse Trials - 11 and 12 September 2008 The CIC** Squad, sponsored by Trizone Boots, performed two demonstrations on each of the dressage competition days, under the guidance of Major Richard Waygood and Jonathan Chapman. These demonstrations were aimed at increasing the exposure and awareness of this event. The exercise was a success.
